New Delhi: Two suspected Bangladeshi smugglers were killed during a firing incident involving Border Security Force personnel near the India-Bangladesh international border in Tripura’s Sepahijala district, officials said.
The incident occurred during a routine night patrol near the zero point along the border, where BSF personnel reportedly noticed a group allegedly attempting to smuggle goods from the Indian side into Bangladesh.
According to official sources, the patrol team repeatedly warned the group and asked them not to move towards the border area. However, the suspected smugglers allegedly ignored the warnings and later began pelting stones and bricks at the security personnel.
Officials stated that the troops initially tried to control the situation without using force and repeatedly asked the group to disperse. As tensions escalated and the situation allegedly became violent, BSF personnel opened fire using Pump Action Guns in what authorities described as an act of self defence.
Two individuals identified as Nabir Hussain, 40, and Md Mursalin, 22, sustained bullet injuries during the firing. They were immediately shifted to nearby government hospitals, where doctors later declared them dead.
Following post mortem examinations conducted on Saturday, the bodies were formally handed over to Bangladesh authorities in the presence of officials from both countries.
The incident sparked tension in the border region and once again brought attention to the continuing security challenges along the India-Bangladesh frontier. Despite extensive fencing and heightened surveillance across the over 4,000 kilometre long border, smuggling, infiltration, human trafficking and narcotics movement continue to remain major concerns for security agencies.
Tripura alone shares an 856 kilometre border with Bangladesh, making it one of the key sectors monitored by the BSF. Border related incidents, including deaths during clashes or firing, are reported regularly from different stretches of the international boundary.
Authorities are expected to conduct further inquiries into the latest incident while maintaining heightened vigilance in the area to prevent any escalation of tensions along the border.
