PANJIM: With fishing season starting tomorrow, the Mandovi Fishermen Marketing Society on Friday has feared that Goans could have to stay without fish for next few months as no labourers have arrived at the Malim Jetty.
Mandovi Fisherman Marketing Cooperative Society, Chairman Francisco D’Souza said “It is doubtful of starting fishing season as no labourers have arrived at malim jetty. There is fear of Goans without fish for Next few months.”
“Due to Covid lot of our labourers from Malim Jetty had left Goa and there is no gaureentee as to when they will be back. Last year this time the Malim Jetty was abuzz with activities but this time the situation is grim.” he said
He further said that the Malim Jetty hosts around 250 to 260 boats but due to lack of labour, no boats will venture into the sea tomorrow.
D’Souza said, “On the other hand we are scared to get labourers because if one gets positive for Covid the entire jetty would be sealed. As of now not a single labourer is in Goa.”
The state’s annual 61-day fishing ban will came into force from June 1. The directorate of fisheries had prohibited fishing till July 31 along the sea cost and territorial waters of Goa.
