New Delhi: The United States has announced it will not extend sanctions waivers that had permitted limited purchases of Russian and Iranian oil, marking a significant shift in its energy and foreign policy approach. The decision brings an end to temporary relaxations that allowed countries such as India to secure additional crude supplies during a period of global disruption.
The waivers had enabled transactions involving oil shipments that were already in transit before mid March deadlines. These measures were introduced to stabilise rising global energy prices and ease supply constraints triggered by escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments.
With the expiry of these waivers, Washington is reinforcing a stricter stance aimed at increasing pressure on both Russia and Iran. The move also signals a departure from earlier efforts to moderate global oil prices through limited sanctions relief.
For India, the waivers had provided an opportunity to boost imports of discounted Russian crude. Domestic refiners reportedly secured substantial volumes during this window, helping offset supply uncertainties. Some refiners had briefly reduced purchases earlier under external pressure but resumed imports as market conditions evolved. Additionally, rare shipments of Iranian crude reached Indian ports during the waiver period, reviving a trade that had been halted for years due to earlier sanctions.
The temporary policy had broader global implications as well. Special licences allowed significant volumes of oil to enter international markets, easing supply concerns during the ongoing conflict. However, these measures also drew criticism within the United States, with concerns that such relaxations indirectly supported the economies of sanctioned nations.
With the waivers now ending, global oil markets may face renewed pressure, while countries reliant on these supplies will need to adjust sourcing strategies amid an increasingly constrained energy landscape.
