New Delhi: The United States has said it is expanding cooperation with India across defence, civil nuclear energy and emerging technologies, including trusted artificial intelligence, underscoring the growing strategic partnership between the two countries.
US Assistant Secretary of State S. Paul Kapur highlighted the strengthening ties during a roundtable discussion on India at the Hoover Institution, attended by former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former US Ambassador to India David C. Mulford.
Kapur said the Trump administration’s engagement with India was helping create jobs in the United States while strengthening supply chains that are vital for both countries and the wider Indo Pacific region. He added that Washington and New Delhi are deepening collaboration in defence and civil nuclear sectors while advancing the adoption of trusted artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies expected to drive future economic growth.
Defence cooperation has become one of the defining features of India US relations over the past two decades. India has significantly expanded its inventory of American military equipment, including Apache and Chinook helicopters, C 17 and C 130J transport aircraft, P 8I maritime patrol aircraft and M777 ultra light howitzers.
The two nations also signed a new defence framework agreement last year aimed at enhancing military cooperation and improving interoperability across land, sea, air, space and cyberspace. The agreement is expected to further strengthen joint operations, technology sharing and strategic coordination.
Civil nuclear energy has also emerged as an important area of collaboration. American nuclear companies are exploring opportunities to participate in India’s expanding nuclear power sector after New Delhi introduced legal reforms designed to encourage greater private investment.
Earlier this year, a delegation of senior executives from the US nuclear industry visited India to assess potential investment and partnership opportunities following the implementation of the SHANTI law, which eased certain regulatory restrictions in the sector.
The latest remarks reflect the continued momentum in India US strategic ties, with both countries placing increasing emphasis on defence, clean energy and advanced technologies as key areas of long term cooperation.
