LOUTOLIM: The beleaguered Loutolim farmers, who have fought valiantly to prevent the khazan fields from being destroyed by the proposed new Borim bridge, have received the backing of Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai.
Sardesai demanded of the government that it stop pushing the new Borim bridge through the khazan fields and find an alternate route after a group of Loutolim farmers paid him a visit on Friday.
Sardesai stated, “The new bridge should come, but on a proper alignment which will not disturb the khazan fields,” implying that the farmers are not against the new Borim bridge but rather are requesting an alignment that will preserve their khazan fields. I’ll bring up the matter during the upcoming Assembly meeting.
Speaking about Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira’s choice to accompany Union Road Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on a delegation of Loutolim farmers during his visit to Goa on July 11–12, Sardesdai said the Minister shouldn’t believe the opposition is attempting to distract him.
“Green politics is the party of Goemkarponn, and we have to preserve the fields for future generations,” Sardesai stated. “There is no politics involved.”
The Fatorda MLA questioned why the National Highway is purchasing such a large amount of land for a road that would only be 60 meters wide, given that a bridge’s width is typically no more than 30 meters.
