PANAJI: Goa Forward President Vijai Sardesai has written to the Chief Secretary over Bandharas constructed by the Karnataka government to divert water in Mhadei Basin
“I have written to the Chief Secretary over Bandharas constructed by Karnataka government to divert water in Mhadei Basin. The State government should immediately investigate this and bring this to the notice of the Tribunal and Supreme Court: said Sardesai.
He further said that Environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar had reported yesterday that the Karnataka Government had initiated the construction of Bandaras on the Mhadei river with the intention of diverting the water outside the Mhadei basin in Karnataka.
“The actions of Karnataka pose a severe threat to the Mhadei River flowing through Goa. There is an urgent need to investigate the matter and bring this to the notice of Tribunal and Supreme Court on priority,” said Sardesai.
Vijai said that Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant had stated multiple times that Mhadei is much more than a mother to him and that we, as Goans, believe that the Mhadei River is our lifeline.
“I, on behalf of the Goa Forward Party, request the government to act on a war footing basis by conducting an inspection immediately and taking necessary steps to prevent Karnataka from constructing the Bandaras and stop any attempts from diverting the water,” he added.
