New Delhi: C Joseph Vijay took oath as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday in a high profile ceremony that many viewed as the beginning of a new political chapter in the state.
Held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the swearing in ceremony followed days of political uncertainty, alliance negotiations, and intense coalition discussions after a fractured election verdict.
Vijay’s appearance and style during the ceremony stood out sharply from Tamil Nadu’s traditional political culture. Wearing a blazer over a white shirt instead of the customary white shirt and dhoti associated with Dravidian politics, the actor turned politician drew loud cheers from supporters as he delivered his oath in a dramatic and energetic style reminiscent of his film performances.
The event marked several major political milestones for the state. It is the first time in nearly six decades that a non Dravidian party has formed the government in Tamil Nadu, ending the long dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. The formation of the new government also signals the return of coalition politics to the state after several decades.
In his first address as Chief Minister, Vijay said his government had inherited an “empty treasury” along with a debt burden of ₹10 lakh crore. He announced that a white paper on the state’s financial condition would be released soon.
The new Chief Minister also promised strict action against drug abuse and crimes against women while prioritising education, healthcare, and water supply. Sending a strong message to allies and party members, Vijay declared that there would be “only one power centre” in the government and warned against any misuse of authority.
Outgoing Chief Minister M K Stalin strongly rejected Vijay’s remarks about the state’s finances, saying the government’s financial condition had already been transparently presented during the budget session. Stalin said governance required both competence and commitment, adding that Vijay would gradually understand the complexities of administration.
Soon after the ceremony, controversy emerged over the order in which the Tamil anthem was played during the event, prompting criticism from opposition parties and some allies. The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam later clarified that the Tamil anthem would continue to receive priority at future state functions.
Political observers believe Vijay’s rapid rise from cinema superstar to Chief Minister has significantly altered Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, with his performance in office expected to shape the future direction of state politics.
