PANAJI: Following the Supreme Court stay on High court order on reservation, the Goa State Election Commission has issued notification resuming the election process in five municipalities as such the new poll dates have been fixed for March 21 and counting on March 22.
The notification issued by SEC says “in exercise of the powers conferred upon it under Article 243ZA of the Constitution of India read with Section 10A of the Goa Municipalities Act, 1968 has issued a notification on 4/03/2021 thereby resuming the election process for Mormugao, Margao, Mapusa, Quepem and Sanguem Municipal Councils from the point it was halted vide order no 4/21/GMCNSE/SEC-2019/502 dated: 01/03/2021.”
The notification says that the nomination papers along with prescribed affidavit of candidates in respect of General Elections to Mormugao, Margao, Mapusa, Quepem and Sanguem Municipal Councils shall be accepted by the respective Returning Officer at the notified place till 6th March, 2021 from 10.00 hrs. to 13.00 hrs.
It says the Model Code of Conduct which was lifted on 01.03.2021 vide order no 4/21/GMCNSE/SEC-2019/502 comes into force with immediate effect in the areas within the jurisdiction of Mormugao, Margao, Mapusa, Quepem and Sanguem, Municipal Councils.
“The poll day for Mormugao, Margao, Mapusa, Quepem and Sanguem Municipal Council is scheduled to be held on 21 March. 2021 (Sunday) from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm. The counting of votes for these Municipal Councils will be held on 22nd March 2021 (Monday) along with other Municipal Councils,” it reads.
