New Delhi: The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has said negotiations with the Pakistan backed administration in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) have made positive progress, while making it clear that no final agreement has been reached and cautioning against any attempt to derail the talks.
JAAC core member Umar Nazir Kashmiri said the committee is seeking a genuine resolution to its demands and not empty assurances. He warned that the organisation would not accept any form of deception during the negotiation process, stating that it wanted meaningful negotiations rather than betrayal.
According to the committee, the latest round of discussions resulted in a consensus on issues related to detainees and missing persons. However, the signing of a formal agreement has been delayed as both sides continue to discuss unresolved matters concerning the ban imposed on the organisation and legal cases, including those registered under Section 302.
The committee said there has been verbal progress during the negotiations but stressed that nothing has been finalised in writing. It added that it would remain cautious until a formal agreement is signed and expected greater clarity on the proposed deal within the next 24 to 48 hours as discussions continue.
JAAC also warned that it would launch an immediate long march if the authorities failed to honour the commitments made during the talks. During a large sit in at Rawalakot, the committee paid tribute to those it described as martyrs and urged supporters to remain prepared while negotiations enter a crucial phase.
The ongoing dialogue follows weeks of unrest across Pakistan occupied Kashmir, where JAAC organised strikes, demonstrations and sit ins demanding action over the alleged detention of activists, enforced disappearances and demolition of homes and shops.
The committee has also sought the release of its detained leader, Shaukat Nawaz Mir, and other protesters. Tensions escalated after the Pakistan backed administration banned JAAC under anti terrorism laws following sustained protests and civil unrest. The arrest of Mir during a joint security operation further intensified public anger, triggering widespread demonstrations across several parts of Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
