PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that his government is serious on giving political reservation to the tribal community of the state.
“Goa govt is serious on giving political reservation to the tribal community of the state and a delegation will meet Union Home Minister and Law Minister in this regards after this assembly session,” CM Sawant
CM’s assurance came on the private Member Resolution moved by BJP MLA Ganesh Gaonkar in the house.
“As per the census of 2011, Scheduled Tribes (ST) constitute 10.23% of Goa’s population. This community deserves to be brought into the mainstream, needs support to make the community more educated as well as empowered and hence needs a larger political representation to achieve the same,” stated the resolution which was passed by the house,
Based on the population 4 assembly seats are likely to be reserved for ST.
Advisor for Mission Political reservation and founder member of Gakuved Federation Govind Shirodkar meanwhile had said , “We are a substantial population and our demand has been around for 20 years, based on the population there should be around three or four constituencies under the reservation,”
He said that the ball is now in the court of the election commission and we feel that this is not a difficult issue but it requires will to do.
If the central government can take up the delimitation process for Jammu and Kashmir, we should not be discriminated against,” he added
