PANAJI: Guruprasad Pawaskar, State Commissioner for Office of Persons with Disabilities has condoled the death of a student, who fell from the Sanjay School building, in Porvorim.
“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Sydney Rodrigues, a cherished member of our community, who tragically lost his life following a mishap recently. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” he said.
Pawaskar said Sydney’s passing is a heart-wrenching reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety and accessibility of all public spaces for individuals with disabilities.
“Our office is deeply committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities and this tragic incident reinforces the urgency of our mission,” he said.
He said persons with disabilities are among the most vulnerable groups when it comes to hazards – either man made or natural and accidents, It is critical that a comprehensive structural safety, accessibility and emergency evacuation audit is conducted of all public buildings in the state to ensure that such tragic events are averted in the future.
“Moving forward, our office is steadfast in its commitment to prioritizing the safety and accessibility of all public spaces. We will take every necessary measure to ensure that safety protocols are rigorously followed and that accessibility standards are consistently met,” he said.
