New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has described the Women’s Reservation Bill as a “historic” and timely reform, urging broad support for its swift implementation. Emphasising the importance of greater female participation in governance, he stated that the legislation reflects the rightful place of women in shaping national policy and strengthening the country’s future.
Highlighting the government’s commitment, Shah noted that the initiative is aimed at empowering women and ensuring their meaningful representation in legislative bodies. He called on all sections of society to come together and back what he termed a transformative step for the nation.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also voiced support for the bill, addressing an open letter to women across the country. He acknowledged the growing appreciation among citizens for the decision to introduce reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, expected to take effect from the 2029 elections. He described the move as a long-awaited milestone that has been under discussion for decades.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed similar sentiments, reaching out directly to women through a public message. He noted the widespread support for increased representation of women in legislative institutions and reaffirmed the government’s resolve to implement the reform. In his message, he also paid tribute to B. R. Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, recognising his enduring contribution to India’s constitutional values and democratic framework.
The Prime Minister further indicated that Parliament is set to reconvene on April 16 to deliberate on a key constitutional amendment linked to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. The upcoming session is expected to play a crucial role in advancing the legislation and moving closer to its implementation.
The renewed push for the bill signals a significant moment in India’s legislative journey, with leaders across the government highlighting its importance in ensuring inclusive governance and gender equality.
