Kolkata: Asaduddin Owaisi launched a sharp attack on Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal while failing to address the concerns of the Muslim community.
In a strongly worded statement, Owaisi alleged that Banerjee had historically played a role in enabling the BJP’s early political growth. He referred to past political developments, questioning her alliances and decisions during key periods when the BJP began gaining ground nationally.
The AIMIM leader also criticised what he described as a “use and discard” approach towards Muslims, claiming that the community is treated as a vote bank rather than being given meaningful development opportunities. He raised concerns over the lack of economic initiatives, including the absence of industrial projects that could benefit minority populations.
Owaisi further expressed frustration over criticism directed at his party for contesting elections in the state. He defended his decision to remain politically active in West Bengal, stating that participation in the democratic process should not be questioned.
His remarks come amid recent political developments involving his former ally Humayun Kabir. Owaisi confirmed that he has ended ties with Kabir following controversy surrounding a viral video. He clarified that his party would now move forward independently, without alliances.
The AIMIM is preparing to contest multiple seats in key regions of West Bengal, including Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum and Asansol. The party had a limited electoral impact in the previous assembly elections, securing a small share of votes.
The exchange highlights intensifying political rhetoric in the state as parties position themselves ahead of upcoming electoral battles, with debates increasingly centred on community representation and governance priorities.
