Panaji: Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar on Wednesday said Goa has not experienced load shedding in the past three years, asserting that the state now has one of the most stable electricity systems in the country.
He said the power distribution network has seen significant improvement, resulting in better and more reliable service for consumers. However, the Minister noted that scheduled maintenance shutdowns remain necessary, particularly in parts of North Goa, and are planned and communicated in advance.
Dhavalikar stated that he has approved scheduled shutdowns, emphasising that such maintenance is essential to ensure long-term efficiency of the system.
On infrastructure, he informed that underground cabling work is progressing across the state, with around 40 per cent completion in certain areas and approximately 20 per cent overall progress. He added that the remaining network, including around 11 kilometres, will be completed in phases.
The Minister also said he has been appointed chairman of the Power Corporation, underscoring the government’s focus on execution and performance-driven governance.
Addressing billing reforms, Dhavalikar said smart metering systems have already been implemented across nearly 70,000 units in government buildings and are now being extended to industrial, commercial, and residential consumers.
He clarified that the smart payment system aims to improve transparency and efficiency, adding that electricity charges are strictly usage-based and consumers need not fear arbitrary increases.
The Minister said the project follows a 60:40 cost-sharing model between the government and consumers and is part of a broader national-level reform implemented in phases over the past one and a half years.
Responding to criticism, he maintained that the government’s focus remains on strengthening infrastructure and ensuring uninterrupted power supply, adding that Goa’s power system is now among the best-performing in the region.
