CANACONA: A 23-year-old man drowned in the Talpona river at Muthal, Sadolxem, Canacona, after a kayak reportedly overturned during a recreational ride on Friday afternoon.
Police received information about the drowning from PCR Margao at around 5.40 pm on September 5, 2026. During the subsequent enquiry at Element Homestay, police learnt that three housekeeping staffers had entered the river at around 3.30 pm for a kayak ride.
The deceased was identified as Rakesh Singh Roy, 23, a resident of Muthal, Sadolxem, Canacona, and originally from West Bengal. The other two persons accompanying him were Bisharlang Shylla, 24, from Meghalaya, and Rupesh Kumar Sahu, 21, from Gumla, Jharkhand.
According to the enquiry, the three reportedly took a kayak that had been kept covered during the off-season, without informing its owner. While returning and nearing the riverbank, Roy allegedly jumped into the water, causing the kayak to overturn. The other two occupants managed to get out of the water, but Roy failed to resurface.
Canacona Fire Station personnel reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. At around 6.30 pm, the body of Roy was recovered from the river.
Police subsequently conducted the scene of the unnatural death (UD) occurrence and an inquest panchanama. The body was preserved at South Goa District Hospital, Margao, for further medico-legal formalities.
Further enquiry is being conducted by PSI Babu Dessai of Canacona Police Station.
