MARGAO: A man from Aquem, Margao, allegedly lost Rs 1.85 lakh after an unknown cyber fraudster reportedly lured him into downloading a PDF reader application through a Facebook pop-up and subsequently gained access to his UPI credentials.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred on September 3, 2026, between 12.29 pm and 12.39 pm, in the area behind Kanta at Aquem, Margao.
The complainant, Elvis Conceicao Carlos Barreto, alleged that he came across a pop-up advertisement on Facebook prompting him to download a PDF reader application. After downloading the application, the unknown accused allegedly fraudulently obtained or accessed his UPI credentials.
The accused subsequently allegedly carried out several unauthorised transactions from the complainant’s bank account, transferring a total of Rs 1,85,000 without his knowledge or consent.
The complainant alleged that the deception resulted in wrongful loss to him and corresponding wrongful gain to the unknown accused.
Margao Town Police Station registered Crime No. 100/2026 under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Further investigation is being conducted by PSI Sameer Gaonkar of Margao Town Police Station.
