New Delhi:
In a significant briefing on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi revealed that a substantial majority of terrorists eliminated in the region last year were of Pakistani origin. Speaking in New Delhi, Gen. Dwivedi highlighted that approximately 60% of the terrorists killed in J&K in 2024 were Pakistani nationals, and about 80% of the active terrorists in the state are also from Pakistan.
Gen. Dwivedi, who has extensive experience in operations along the borders with Pakistan and China, emphasized that despite the ongoing ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) since February 2021, terror infrastructure across the border remains intact. He noted that infiltration attempts, including those from the International Border (IB) sector, and drone smuggling of warlike stores and narcotics continue to pose significant challenges.
The Army Chief also pointed out an increase in terrorist activities in North Kashmir and the Doda-Kishtwar belt in recent months, although he assured that overall violence parameters are under control. The successful conduct of the Amarnath Yatra, which saw over 500,000 pilgrims, and the peaceful execution of Lok Sabha and Assembly elections were cited as indicators of a positive shift towards tourism from terrorism.
Regarding the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, Gen. Dwivedi described it as “stable” but “sensitive.” He mentioned that Indian and Chinese militaries have disengaged from the last two friction points, and patrolling and grazing in traditional areas have resumed in Depsang and Demchok. The Army is focusing on enhancing border infrastructure and capability development, ensuring a balanced and robust deployment capable of handling any situation.
