New Delhi: India are set to make cricketing history by facing Japan in their first ever T20 international clash on September 22 at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture, just two days before the Asian Games 2026 begin.
The landmark fixture is expected to generate interest as India and Japan have never previously met in a cricket match. However, uncertainty over the broadcasting arrangements has emerged ahead of the contest, with efforts reportedly underway to secure a suitable television partner.
The Japan Cricket Association is understood to be in discussions with ITW Universe regarding the broadcast rights. The match’s proximity to the Asian Games has created logistical challenges, particularly because broadcasters will have to coordinate coverage around multiple events taking place in Japan.
While a television agreement has yet to be finalised, the match could be streamed live on YouTube. In India, FanCode is expected to be involved in the broadcast arrangement, having previously worked with the Japan Cricket Association.
The scheduling presents another challenge. The women’s cricket final at the Asian Games is due to take place at Korogi Athletic Park in Nisshin City, Aichi, around an hour after the India Japan men’s match begins. With India’s women considered among the leading contenders for the gold medal, broadcasters could face a difficult choice in managing coverage of the two fixtures.
The Indian men’s team will also conduct a training session in Sano before taking on Japan.
Beyond cricket, the fixture carries wider significance. The match will launch the Sport 75 initiative, commemorating the upcoming 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. The Suzuki Cup contest is also intended to promote cricket in East Asia and strengthen sporting ties between the two countries as India continues its ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
