New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party is preparing to form its government in West Bengal, with the swearing-in ceremony likely scheduled for May 9, aligning with the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. The date is being viewed as both politically significant and culturally meaningful, marking a fresh chapter in the state’s governance.
Party leaders have indicated that the timing is intentional, reflecting a symbolic connection with Bengal’s cultural heritage. State unit chief Samik Bhattacharya confirmed that preparations are underway for the new Chief Minister to take oath on that day. The announcement follows a decisive electoral outcome that has paved the way for a change in leadership.
During the campaign, Narendra Modi had hinted at this timeline, expressing confidence that he would return to the state after the results to attend the oath-taking ceremony. After the victory, he invoked Tagore’s ideals, emphasising a vision for a fearless and progressive Bengal inspired by the poet’s philosophy.
The government formation process is now moving through formal procedures. Senior officials are expected to complete documentation of the election results, after which the state’s Chief Electoral Officer will brief C. P. Radhakrishnan. As per constitutional norms, the Governor will then invite the outgoing Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, to submit her resignation and continue in a caretaker role until the new administration is sworn in.
Choosing May 9, also known as Rabindra Jayanti, adds emotional significance to the transition. The day is deeply revered across Bengal, celebrating Tagore’s literary, musical, and philosophical legacy. It is marked by cultural programmes, recitations, and widespread public participation, reflecting the enduring influence of his work.
With the BJP poised to end decades of rule by Left parties and the Trinamool Congress, the upcoming swearing-in is expected to be a defining moment in the state’s political landscape. Official confirmation of the ceremony is anticipated soon as final arrangements take shape.
