PANAJI: All does not seem to be well in the Grand Old Party – Congress in Goa again.
The President of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, Amit Patkar, who has often been labelled as a weak president by his own party colleagues, has kicked off yet another controversy.
This time around, party leaders say, he has disrespected his own party’s Leader of Opposition, Yuri Alemao and led a delegation to another party president to take up an issue in the forthcoming Assembly.
From the image, which have gone viral on social media, it is seen that Patkar is leading a delegation of representatives of Mining Workers to Goa Forward President Vijai Sardesai.
Sardesai’s team has circulated the photo saying, “Delegation of representative of Mining Workers called on Goa Forward President Vijai Sardesai demanding to raise injustice meted out to Mining Workers by the Mining Companies. GFP President has assured the Delegation to raise their voice.”
Interestingly Patkar is also a mining stakeholder and has a mining transportation business.
Congress leaders are now gunning for Amit Patkar’s head, saying he has insulted his own party’s Leader of Opposition.
“He has insulted the LoP Yuri Alemao. Does he not trust LoP to take up the issue in the Assembly? What was the need to go to Vijai? Tomoroorw he will lead a delegation to CM to safeguard his business,” said a former president who did not want to be named.
When contacted, Amit Patkar rejected the allegations, saying he did not intend to insult Alemao or LoP.
“The mining delegation first came to LoP, and then they also wanted to meet Vijai and requested me to accompany them. That’s it. I had requested not to use the picture when he sent it to media, and if required, he could click another pic (without me) and send it. But they sent the same pic with me,” he explained.
Patkar said he went there as Vijai was sitting next to the LoPs cabin.
The Congress leaders, however, were not convinced by Patkar’s explanation and said there was no need for him to Vijai or any other party.
“As the party president, you are bounded by certain rules and principles. What example are you setting for party workers? You cannot insult your CLP leader like this,” leaders said.
