MAEGAO: Ambelim SC defeated United Club Verna 5-3 via a tie-breaker to enter the semi-finals of the Fr. Bruno Leitao Memorial Cup 2024, Organized by Union of Chinchinim villagers and played on Chinchinim Church ground.
Ambelim SC started attacking from the very start of the match with Asfin and Arvind trying to penetrate the Verna defence.
Their hard work earned them a free kick in the 9th minute just outside the left corner of the penalty box, the well-executed free kick was saved by the Verna goalkeeper.
Verna regrouped and started attacking Ambelim but could not penetrate the defence. In the 24th minute, Verna’s goalkeeper made an on-one save of Asfin Pinto to keep the score 0-0 till the half time.
In the second half, both the teams started very cautiously, Asfin and Arvind were trying to work hard
to disturb the defence, in the 14th minute, a cross by Asfin from the zero angle was anticipated and
cleared for a corner by the Verna defender.
Verna also started making raids on the Ambelim defence
and in the 47th minute, a loose clearance by the Ambelim defence was capitalized by Clifford Rebello
to give a lead for United Club Verna,1-0.
In injury time a save by the veteran defender from Micheal Silva’s attempt was intercepted by Arvind, right in the goal mouth which he converted to equalize, the match ended with a score of 1-1.
In the resultant tiebreaker, Ambelim netted through Micheal Silva, Velroy Fernandes, Asfin Pinto, and Blasco Fernandes while Saivon Albuquerque and Savio Pereira scored for United Club Verna.
Asfin Pinto of Ambelim SC was awarded player of the match presented by Mrs.Ivy Ferroa, Panch member, Chinchinim-Deussua.
