PANAJI: The COVID19 pandemic is back to haunt everyone again with the cases in the entire country, including Goa has been on the rise.
The Health Minister of Goa Vishwajit Rane has made a proposal for making COVID19 certificate for those entering Goa, especially, the tourists, who are reluctant to follow the State government SOPs. This means the situation is grim as the State’s tally has crossed 1000 cases again.
Thousands of tourists have descended in Goa following lockdowns in other parts of the country and are openly flouting rules, which has been a huge risk to the citizens of the State.
While the cases are steadily rising with every passing day one opine that whether the government must go ahead with the online exams? Is it not going to risk lives of all students?
Considering the current situation, the government State could do well in postponing the exams or atleast have it online mode.
Currently, schools in Goa are only allowed to hold offline classes for Class X and Class XII students, while other students are taught online by educational institutions. Classes for Class X and Class XII students began from November 21 this year.
According to the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, exams for Class X are scheduled to begin from May 13, while Class XII exams are scheduled to start from April 26
When contacted Goa Board chairman Bhagirath Shetye told Goemkarponn that no decision is taken on exams so far.
“However, the HSSC practicals in offline mode are set to begin from March 24. We have told schools that if any student or his or her family member tests positive or quarantine then they not he called for practical and same he held after theory exams,” he said.
He further stated that also all students to get half an hour extra for practical exams.
However, the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, who also doubles up as the Education Minister said at a function that there was anxiety among students about when and how the exams would be conducted.
“A lot of students are wondering when higher secondary schools or colleges will resume classes. We are stressing on offline exams this year. Class XI, XII as well as college exams will be held offline,” Sawant said.
Parents are critical of the State government decision under current situation.
“How can we risk taking exams in offline mode? Why does the government not understand the situation? The exams can very well be held on online mode,” said a parent.
Another parent asked, “if classes have bene held in online mode, why should the exams be in online mode? If one student gets COVID then the entire class can be infected. With rising COVID19 cases, the government must think on scrapping the exams or atleast have on online mode.”
