New Delhi: The Kerala Cabinet has approved the allotment of an additional 90 acres of land to the Defence Research and Development Organisation for its BrahMos project in Thiruvananthapuram, completing the 180 acres required for the strategic defence initiative.
Addressing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister V D Satheesan said only 90 acres had initially been allotted, even though the project required a total of 180 acres. He said the Cabinet has now approved the allocation of the remaining 90 acres, enabling the project to obtain the necessary approvals for its next phase.
The additional land has been allotted to the Defence Research and Development Organisation to facilitate the establishment and expansion of the proposed defence infrastructure.
The project involves BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Limited, which plans to set up an Advanced Missile and Other Strategic Unit along with related facilities at Kallikkad in Kattakkada taluk.
The state government had earlier approved the allotment of 180 acres of land free of cost for the project. With the latest Cabinet decision, the entire land requirement has now been formally cleared, paving the way for the project to move forward.
BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Limited, headquartered at Chackai in the state capital, is a key defence manufacturing facility associated with the production of strategic missile systems and other defence equipment.
The Cabinet also approved an increase in the authorised share capital of **Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Limited> (KELTRON) from ₹35 crore to ₹60 crore, a move aimed at strengthening the state-owned electronics enterprise and supporting its future growth plans.
