New Delhi: The Mumbai Indians stunned fans ahead of their IPL 2026 clash against the Lucknow Super Giants when Suryakumar Yadav walked out for the toss instead of regular skipper Hardik Pandya. The unexpected change initially raised questions, with only a brief explanation that the captain was unwell.
It was later revealed that Pandya missed the match due to back spasms, a development that even his teammate Ryan Rickelton learned about just hours before the game. Speaking after the match, Rickelton said he was unaware of the injury until the afternoon and remained uncertain about its severity, though he expressed hope that Pandya would return soon.
Despite the late disruption, Mumbai delivered a commanding performance. After opting to bowl first, they conceded a formidable 228 for 5, powered by aggressive innings from Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh, and Himmat Singh.
In response, Mumbai produced one of the most impressive chases of the season. Rickelton led the charge with a blistering 83 off just 32 balls, while Rohit Sharma anchored the innings with a fluent 84. The duo’s 143-run opening partnership dismantled the target, guiding the team to victory in just 18.4 overs.
The win provided a much-needed boost for Mumbai, who have struggled for consistency this season and currently sit near the bottom of the points table. Lucknow, meanwhile, remain rooted at the last position with only a couple of wins.
While the result lifted Mumbai’s campaign slightly, attention now shifts to Pandya’s fitness. His availability for upcoming matches will be crucial as the team looks to build momentum in the final stretch of the tournament.
