PANAJI: Following pressure from the victim families, the State government today has handed over the Banastarim road accident case to crime branch for further investigation.
Total three people died after a speeding Mercedes-Benz SUV, driven by a drunk driver, ramp into their vehicles on August 6 night.
A delegation led by Cumbarjua MLA Rajesh Faldessai had recently met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and demanded to hand over the case to Crime Branch and to conduct judicial enquiry in the matter.
The delegation had told Chief Minister that they don’t have faith in Mardol police as they tried everything to protect Meghna Sawardekar. Lawyer of accident victims Raviraj Chodankar also demanded narco or lie detection test of Sawardekar couple.
When the case came up for hearing in the court today, the prosecution adopted a different strategy and told the court that the case was being handed over by the Mhardol police to the crime branch. Therefore, the court had to adjourn the hearing in this case.
On August 6, Paresh had rammed 6 vehicles while driving a Mercedes car at high speed under the influence of alcohol.
Three people died and three others were seriously injured in this accident. Bottles of alcohol were also found in the Mercedes. Paresh’s wife Meghna Sawardekar was also in the car with him at this time.
The locals had taken a march to the police station demanding her arrest. But Meghna has obtained interim pre-arrest bail from the Fonda Sessions Court and the hearing will be held on 23rd.
Meghna, determined not to cooperate with the police investigation following Meghna’s petition, did not receive a single summon from the Mardol police.
Now she has challenged the police summons in the high court as well. She has said that she is unable to go to the police station and give a statement due to health reasons.
