New Delhi: The 2026 Assembly election results are pointing towards a major political reshaping across India, with the Bharatiya Janata Party gaining decisive ground in West Bengal, actor C. Joseph Vijay’s party making a dramatic debut in Tamil Nadu, and the Indian National Congress leading the race in Kerala.
In West Bengal, early counting trends show the BJP crossing the majority mark in the 294 seat Assembly, signalling a potential end to the long rule of the All India Trinamool Congress led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The result, if confirmed, would mark a historic breakthrough for the party in the state after years of political contest.
Tamil Nadu is witnessing one of its biggest political surprises in decades. Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has surged ahead in early trends, leading in a significant number of seats in the 234 member Assembly. The party has outpaced both the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, indicating a possible shift away from the state’s long standing two party dominance.
In Kerala, the Congress led United Democratic Front has taken an early lead over the incumbent Left government headed by Pinarayi Vijayan. If sustained, this could mark a return to power for the Congress in a state known for alternating political mandates.
Elsewhere, the BJP led alliance is ahead in Assam, while in Puducherry, the ruling alliance under Chief Minister N. Rangasamy is maintaining its lead.
With counting still underway, these early trends suggest a day of significant political change, with new power equations emerging across several key states.
