SALCETE: Concern over the loss of roadside trees has escalated in Camurlim, with residents seeking an explanation from the authorities and calling for an inquiry into the felling.
Locals, including Fr Eremito Rebello and Jesus Romao, have objected to the removal of the trees and urged the village panchayat and Forest Department to intervene.
Residents have raised concerns that removing trees from the roadside could affect the stability of the soil. Rebello cautioned that the disturbance to the vegetation and soil could increase the risk of erosion and, during heavy rains, potentially contribute to landslides.
The residents have questioned whether the authorities were aware of the tree felling and, if so, why action was not taken.
The issue is now set to be taken to the gram sabha, where residents intend to seek answers from the panchayat and demand accountability over the loss of roadside tree cover.
“We will raise the issue at the gram sabha so that the Panchayat answers the questions raised by the local residents. We want accountability from the authorities, including the Panchayat and Forest Department,” Romao said.
Residents have also called for the circumstances surrounding the tree felling to be examined and for appropriate action to be taken if any violations are established.
