Canacona: In a brave and timely operation, Canacona police personnel rescued a financially distressed man who was on the verge of jumping off a hilltop at Talpona on Monday evening.
The man, employed at a starred hotel in Canacona, had climbed the hill behind the Talpona Coastal Police Station and was standing at the edge of the cliff, facing severe emotional and financial stress.
According to Canacona SDPO and DySP Nilesh Rane, the police control room received urgent information that a hotel employee was in distress at the Talpona hilltop. Acting swiftly, Canacona police rushed to the spot.
Canacona PSI Reddy managed to obtain the man’s mobile number through the Gujarat Police Control Room, which he had mistakenly contacted earlier while requesting that his family be informed of his intentions. PSI Reddy immediately established contact and repeatedly appealed to him to step back, assuring him that help was available.
Canacona PI Pravin Gawas continued speaking to the man over the phone, trying to calm him and persuade him to move away from danger. Meanwhile, PSI Reddy, along with Home Guards Dilip Gaonkar and Jagdish Gaonkar, quietly approached the hilltop from the opposite side.
Showing exceptional courage and presence of mind, the home guards caught hold of the man from behind while he was distracted on the phone, safely pulling him away from the cliff edge and averting a tragedy.
The man was brought safely to the police station and later reunited with his family with the support of his employer.
Praising the team, DySP Nilesh Rane said the swift action of the home guards gave the man a second chance at life. “This act reflects courage, humanity, and commitment far beyond the call of duty,” he said.
It was learnt that the well-educated youth had taken the job hoping for better pay but was earning a modest salary. To maintain an image of financial stability, he reportedly borrowed money and sent it home. When further demands arose, the pressure and fear of revealing the truth left him emotionally overwhelmed, leading to the distressing incident.
