CANACONA – The lifeline of Canconcars ‘Chapoli Dam’, known to meet about 65% of Water supply needs in the Taluka, has been full and overflowing since early Tuesday morning.
‘The Chapoli Dam began to overflow starting at 6.15 am on Tuesday (19/07/2022), perhaps one of the quickest periods in recent years, as the Dam is known to reach its capacity as late as August.
While it rained intermittently throughout Monday 00.00hrs -24.00hrs), the rain observatory at the Chapoli dam recorded no rainfall on the day, while the total rainfall recorded crossed 2006.30 mm.
While Chapoli Dam has achieved water Storage of 1122.3125 ham, a Reduced Level (RI) of 38.75 Mtrs began to overflow at 6.15 am on Tuesday morning.
With the Dam overflowing, the Chapoli river, which flows through Devabhaga, Palolem, to the Arabian sea, was activated simultaneously.
While the Dam failed to fill to its capacity in 2017, last year(2021), the Chapoli dam began to overflow only after 23rd July.
Besides meeting the Taluka’s major part of water supply needs, the Chapoli Dam, through its Canals, also meets the irrigation requirements covering important agricultural lands.
Importantly, since its inception in the year 2000, Chapoli dam has only once failed to receive water to its full Reservoir capacity of 38.75 RL in the year 2017, however, have a history of overflowing as early as the first week of July month(the inception year of 2000), and as late of September month.
With only one and that too a non-perennial Chapoli rivulet coming under its catchment area, the Chapoli Dam, with a depth of 25.5 m, has approximately 12 km of catchments area as its feeding source at the foot of Sahayadri hills.
Besides, it also has a history of getting its Reservoir full only after the taluka receives seasonal rains between 90 to 100 Inches, whereas Chapoli dam began to overflow early Tuesday morning when seasonal rains were around just 79 inches only in Canacona.
