PANAJI: Chief Justice of India (CJI) S A Bobde said tha itellectuals should observe adminstration of Justice in Goa under Uniform Civil Code.
Addressing the media, CJI said that there is a lot of academic talk about Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in present times and intellectuals who are engaged in such debates should go to Goa and observe administration of justice in the State under the UCC which is in force in the State.
“Goa has what the Constitutional framers envisaged for India, a Uniform Civil Code. It applies in marriage and succession governing all Goans irrespective of religious affiliation,” said Bobde
He further said that Goa is the only State in India which has a UCC thereby having uniform personal laws governing all citizens regardless of their religion.
S A Bobde also hailed the Goa government led by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for handing over 1.50 lakh sq MTRS of land for bar council of India trust.
Bobde said that Goa government is one of the few governments who has handed land for the Bar Council of India.
“Today I thank the Goa government led by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for handing over 1.50 lakh sq MTRS of land for bar council of India trust; Very few governments have done this in the past,” said Bobde while addressing the gathering
Bobde also insisted for a new court building for Bombay High Court while stating that it was built for 7 judges but now houses more than 40.
He also looked back at the history of Goa’s liberation saying it was unlike liberation movements such as Hyderabad, being bloodless with no shots fired and no conflict between the armies.
The work of the new two-storey court building has been executed by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC). The building will have seven court rooms, chambers for Chief Justice and judges, chambers for registrar general and assistant registrar general, court halls and conference hall for judges, record room, visitors room, store room etc.
The foundation stone for the new High Court complex was laid in December 2013.
However, the High Court which is currently functioning at Altinho will be shifted and function from the new complex at Porvorim from June this year.
