New Delhi: India’s campaign at the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup resumed after more than two decades with a 0-2 defeat against Australia, but the mood within the camp remains focused on recovery and improvement. Midfielder Thandamoni Baskey acknowledged the disappointment but stressed the team’s determination to bounce back in the upcoming fixtures.
Head coach Pamela Conti described the match as challenging against a physically strong opponent, noting that both goals conceded resulted from avoidable errors. Despite the scoreline, she highlighted the team’s defensive discipline, pointing out that Australia was limited in creating clear chances.
India maintained a structured approach for most of the game, with players showing commitment and organisation. The second half saw a more attacking intent, as the team pushed forward and created opportunities, even registering shots on target while restricting their opponents. However, an own goal and an earlier lapse proved decisive.
Baskey, who played a key role in midfield, reflected on the performance, stating that while the team executed its plans well in parts, crucial moments could have been handled better. She emphasised that the players were aware of the physical challenge posed by Australia and had prepared accordingly, focusing on keeping the ball on the ground rather than engaging in aerial battles.
Substitute Anushka Kumari also pointed to the need for improved attacking efficiency, noting that the team must create more chances and convert opportunities in front of goal. India’s strategy to counter physicality showed some success, particularly in the second half where they won more duels and displayed greater attacking urgency.
Looking ahead, the challenge intensifies with a match against Japan, a side that has already demonstrated formidable form in the tournament. The coaching staff plans to analyse errors and refine tactics as the team prepares for the crucial encounter.
With two group matches still remaining, India remain determined to regroup quickly and keep their hopes alive, carrying forward both lessons learned and confidence gained from their performance.
