PANAJI: Stating that there was no drug mafia operating in Goa, DGP Jaspal Singh IPS today said that Goa Police is in of giving narcotic drug testing to courier operators in the state to check for any inflow of drugs into the state via parcels.
Singh was speaking on the sidelines of an awareness program for courier and parcel service operators held in Panaji.
“Goa Police is in the process of giving narcotic drug testing to courier operators in the state to check for any inflow of drugs into the state via parcels,” said Singh.
Singh further said that recently there was one 74 years British national who used a courier service to transport drugs from Pernem.
“I urge operators in the state to be alert and be on the lookout for suspicious behaviour and activity. If drug business increases in Goa, good tourists will not come to the state,” he added.
The DGP said that big gangs or drug mafias are not found to be operational in Goa.
“Drugs are peddled in small quantities for recreational purposes only, he asserted. Goa is more of a consumption centre for recreational purposes. No gang of mafia has come to our notice,” said DGP.
He also said that the drug trade and police intervention are increasing year on year and that the drug haul seized in 2022 was 3 times more than that seized in the previous year.
