PANAJI: In order to include Goa in the National Forest Fire Prevention and Management Plan, Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane said that he would soon have a meeting with the Government of India in Delhi.
“n order to include Goa in the National Forest Fire Prevention and Management Plan, I will soon have a meeting with the Govt of India in Delhi. By doing this, we can enlist more agencies to help us manage circumstances where a significant amount of infrastructure is required,” said Rane
He further said that the Defense Ministry has also given us its full backing, and they will provide us with aerial support as needed.
Rane said that it is a great respite for us as we have received no reports of fires since yesterday.
“Nonetheless, the locations of extinguished fires are closely watched to look for any recurrence. A close eye is kept on places like Derodem, Surla-Mhadei, etc. that could experience recurrence,” said Rane.
“At Cotigao and Netravali, increased humidity and sparse showers have provided some relief. For a close vigil, more than 350 people have been deployed,” he added.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Rane added that the NDMA has advised Goa’s forest department to assess the area affected by fires and take corrective measures at the earliest
“State Government will prepare a comprehensive Forest Fire Management Plan to prevent and manage forest fires,” he said.
