Amstelveen: The Indian men’s hockey team faces its first major challenge of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 as it takes on England in a high intensity Pool D clash at the Wagener Hockey Stadium on Monday.
India opened its campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory over Wales, while England made an equally strong statement by defeating Pakistan 4-1. With both sides entering the contest unbeaten, the result could prove decisive in determining the Pool D leaders and securing a stronger position for the knockout stage.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh led India’s winning start with two penalty corner goals after Sanjay had opened the scoring. While India’s set piece conversion was outstanding, the team will be looking to improve its finishing from open play after creating several chances without finding the net.
The rivalry between India and England has produced several memorable encounters in recent years. Their dramatic quarterfinal at the Paris Olympics saw India prevail despite playing with 10 men for most of the match following Amit Rohidas’ red card, before eventually claiming the bronze medal. More recently, the two sides shared one victory each in shootouts during the FIH Pro League in London, underlining how evenly matched they have become.
Midfielder Hardik Singh said India respects England’s quality despite having enjoyed success in major tournaments, stressing that every World Cup match demands complete focus. Head coach Craig Fulton echoed that view, describing England as the highest ranked team in the group and insisting India would look to impose its own game and fight for all three points.
With the top two teams from each pool advancing to the next stage, Monday’s encounter is expected to be one of the defining matches of Pool D.
