Margao: Freedom fighter Gurunath Kelekar’s last rights were performed today at Mathgramast Hindu Smasham Bhumi, Pajifond, Margao.
His son Samir Kelekar gave Matragni to his body.
Earlier in the day, Gurunath Kelekar’s mortal remains were brought to Margao near Hari Mandir, where he spent most of the time.
Opposition leader and Margao MLA Digamber Kamat, Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardesai, Narendra Sawaikar, Damu Naik, freedom fighter Nagesh Karmali, Harichndra Nagvekar, and many konkani lovers and writers paid their last tribute to the freedom fighter.
The procession started at 11:30 from his house to Matgramast Hindu Smshan Bhumi.
NRI commissioner Naredra Sawaikar said the contribution of Gurunath bab in freedom struggle was very big and cannot be forgotten, Goa lost a gem of person who was multitalented and icon for youth.
Digamber Kamat said “I was shocked to hear the news of sad demise of Gurunath bab.”
He was evergreen hero of Goa and youth should take him as icon. His continuation in teaching traffic discipline cannot be forgotten. His exit is a big loss to our society.
Senior journalist Anil Pai said today Goa lost a biggest idol and big lover of Konkani and a prominent writer.
“Gurunath bab lived and worked for Goy, Goykar and Goykarpon till his last breath. A great freedom fighter. After Goa liberation Gurunath bab worked very hard to for Konkani movement in 1962 he started first Konkani magazine Maruti. He also translated English to Konkani dictionary,” he said.
Through his MARGA organisation he nearly educated more then 80 thousand children’s and established more then 20 clubs on civic sense and traffic discipline this is a big loss to our society, said Anil Pai
