New Delhi:
The cricket world is abuzz with a fresh wave of controversy as former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary has leveled serious allegations against current India head coach Gautam Gambhir. Tiwary’s accusations, which span their tumultuous relationship during their time at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and a contentious Ranji Trophy match, have sparked significant debate within the cricket community.
The longstanding feud between Tiwary and Gambhir has been a subject of discussion for some time, but the latest revelations have brought the issue to the forefront once again. Tiwary’s comments highlight a pattern of behavior by Gambhir that includes verbal abuse and threats, which have left many questioning the coach’s conduct and leadership.
Tiwary recounted a particularly heated argument that occurred during their KKR days, which centered around his batting position at Eden Gardens. This dispute almost escalated into a physical altercation but was intervened by then bowling coach Wasim Akram. According to Tiwary, Gambhir followed him into the washroom and threatened him, saying, “This attitude won’t work. I won’t give you a game.” This incident marked a significant turning point in their strained relationship.
The tensions between the two cricketers culminated in a notorious altercation during a 2015 Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Bengal. Tiwary alleged that Gambhir verbally abused him on the field, using derogatory language and even threatening physical violence. “He was abusing from slips. Nobody should use such words,” Tiwary stated, adding that Gambhir’s behavior continued even after the umpire intervened. The umpires, reportedly intimidated by Gambhir’s influence, were unable to effectively address the situation.
Tiwary suggested that Gambhir’s behavior was motivated by a sense of insecurity and jealousy, particularly over the media attention given to new players. “When a new player emerges, he is given space in the newspapers. Maybe that is one of the reasons why he got angry with me,” Tiwary explained.
In addition to the personal allegations, Tiwary has also criticized Gambhir’s coaching methods and questioned his appointment as head coach. Following India’s recent poor performances, including a 1-3 defeat against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Tiwary has argued that more experienced coaches would have been better suited for the role. He has labeled Gambhir a “hypocrite” for his coaching approach, highlighting inconsistencies in his stance on hiring foreign coaches.
The strained relationship between Tiwary and Gambhir dates back to their KKR days, with multiple confrontations reported over the years. These incidents have not only damaged their personal relationship but also raised questions about Gambhir’s suitability as a coach and his ability to manage team dynamics effectively.
