PANAJI: Goans for Goa (GFG) has criticised the State Government and the Electricity Department, alleging that electricity consumers are being burdened through increased tariffs, sanctioned load penalties and mandatory smart meter implementation.
In a statement, GFG President Kennedy Afonso said the recently approved tariff hikes were excessive and unjustified, adding that electricity being an essential service should remain affordable for ordinary households.
GFG demanded that the government ensure a stable tariff structure for consumption up to 400 to 500 units, stating that higher rates should apply only beyond this level.
The organisation also raised objections over sanctioned load penalties, claiming that merely increasing the sanctioned load would not provide relief unless the tariff structure itself is revised.
Questioning the mandatory smart meter rollout, GFG said consumers should be given a choice and sought clarity from the government on the need for compulsory implementation.
GFG has called upon the government to review the power-related decisions and address consumer concerns, warning of public mobilisation if corrective measures are not taken.
