New Delhi:
In a landmark event that underscores India’s burgeoning prowess in indigenous shipbuilding and defence self-reliance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated three frontline naval combatants to the nation on January 15, 2025. This historic commissioning of INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer marks the first time a destroyer, a frigate, and a submarine have been commissioned simultaneously, highlighting a significant leap in India’s maritime capabilities.
The ceremony, held at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, was a testament to India’s growing expertise in defence production and its commitment to strengthening its naval forces. PM Modi emphasized the importance of this event, linking it to the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan and the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who had envisioned a robust Indian Navy.
Commissioning of the Vessels
At the heart of this milestone are three cutting-edge naval platforms. INS Nilgiri, the lead ship of the Project 17A stealth frigate class, is a product of the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). This advanced frigate boasts enhanced survivability, seakeeping, and stealth capabilities, making it a formidable asset for surface warfare and anti-submarine operations. It is equipped with modern aviation facilities, including the capability to operate multiple helicopter types such as the MH-60R.
INS Surat, the fourth and final vessel of the Project 15B stealth destroyer class, follows in the footsteps of the Kolkata-class destroyers. Designed and built by the same entities as INS Nilgiri, INS Surat incorporates significant improvements in design and capability, making it a critical addition to the Navy’s surface fleet. This destroyer is armed with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, Barak-8 medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and other advanced weaponry.
INS Vaghsheer, the sixth and final submarine under the Scorpene-class Project 75, is a diesel-electric submarine designed for multiple roles including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and intelligence gathering. Built at MDL, INS Vaghsheer features modular construction, enabling future upgrades such as air-independent propulsion technology. This submarine is part of the Kalvari-class, known for its stealth technology and operational versatility.
Significance and Impact
The commissioning of these vessels is a significant step in India’s defence self-reliance and indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. All three platforms have undergone extensive trials and are now fully operational, ready to enhance the Navy’s maritime strength. This achievement reflects India’s strategic vision for national security and economic development, demonstrating the country’s ability to design and build advanced naval combatants entirely within its borders.
