PANAJI: The Goa Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board is considering a proposal to make registration compulsory for all construction companies operating in the state, with the objective of improving regulation and expanding social security coverage for workers.
The initiative is intended to bring construction employers under a formal system so that workers engaged at various sites can be properly identified and enrolled under welfare schemes. Authorities feel this will help ensure that benefits meant for labourers are not missed due to gaps in registration or informal hiring practices.
Currently, registered workers are eligible for various government-supported benefits, including financial aid, educational assistance for dependents, and other welfare measures. However, officials have noted that a large section of the workforce, particularly migrant and informal labourers, remains outside the registration net, limiting their access to these schemes.
Concerns have also been raised about incomplete records of construction activity and weak monitoring of compliance by some contractors and firms. The proposed mandatory registration is expected to improve data accuracy and strengthen enforcement mechanisms.
The Board is likely to take up the proposal with relevant departments for further discussion before moving towards implementation, with the broader aim of improving transparency and ensuring better protection for construction workers across Goa.
