PORVORIM: In a major boost to veterinary education and animal healthcare infrastructure in the State, the Government of India has granted the Letter of Permission (LoP) for the establishment of the Goa College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Kurti in Ponda under Goa University.
The approval has been issued by the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying for starting the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) degree programme with an annual intake capacity of 40 students from the academic year 2026–27.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant welcomed the development and said the institution would play a key role in strengthening veterinary education, livestock services and animal healthcare in Goa.
“Pleased to share that the Government of India has granted the Letter of Permission for the establishment of Goa College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Kurti, Ponda, under Goa University. This approval is a major step towards strengthening veterinary education, animal healthcare, dairy development, and livestock services in Goa,” Sawant said.
He further stated that the college would create new opportunities for Goan students to pursue professional veterinary education within the State while contributing to the welfare of farmers, livestock owners and the animal husbandry sector.
The Chief Minister also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Veterinary Council of India, Goa University and officials involved in securing the approval for the institution.
According to the approval letter, the Veterinary Council of India carried out inspection and evaluation of the proposed institution and found that it fulfilled the required standards relating to infrastructure, land, clinical facilities, livestock farm complex and academic requirements under the prescribed regulations.
The permission has been granted for the academic session 2026–27 subject to compliance with norms and continued verification by the Veterinary Council of India.
