New Delhi: India captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted that missed opportunities in the field played a crucial role in her side’s six-wicket defeat to South Africa in a Women’s T20 World Cup Group A encounter.
The loss came despite some disciplined bowling performances, with Harmanpreet highlighting the efforts of Shree Charani and Shafali Verma. However, she felt the bowlers were let down by lapses in the field at key moments of the match.
South Africa’s match-winner Marizanne Kapp made India pay for those mistakes. Kapp was given two lifelines when chances were spilled in the outfield and went on to produce a match-defining unbeaten 81 from just 45 deliveries, striking seven boundaries and four sixes.
The Indian skipper acknowledged that her side had opportunities to turn the game in their favour but failed to capitalise. She noted that at the highest level, taking chances is essential and that the missed catches ultimately shifted the momentum towards South Africa.
The match was also a personal milestone for Harmanpreet, who became the first cricketer, male or female, to play 200 T20 Internationals. Despite the landmark achievement, the captain’s focus remained firmly on the team’s performance and the lessons to be taken from the defeat.
India remain second in Group A, behind defending champions Australia Women’s Cricket Team, who have won all three of their matches. With two group-stage fixtures still to play against Bangladesh and Australia, Harmanpreet stressed the importance of staying positive and reassessing the team’s approach.
She described the defeat as a learning experience, pointing to both encouraging moments and areas that require improvement. The captain expressed confidence that India can bounce back strongly and deliver better performances in the remaining matches as they continue their pursuit of a place in the semi-finals.
With qualification still in their own hands, India will now look to regroup quickly and ensure costly fielding errors do not derail their World Cup campaign.
