PANAJI: The Goa Human Rights Commission, in a proactive move, has taken suo motu cognizance of the recent tragedy that unfolded in Panaji.
A 21-year-old man lost his life in a road accident at Mala, when his two-wheeler fell into an under-construction sewage chamber. The shocking incident has prompted the rights body to issue notices to Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited and the Public Works Department (PWD).
The commission has demanded thorough reports concerning the incident from the managing director of Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited and the Chief Engineer of the PWD.
The reports, slated for submission by January 15, are expected to elucidate the circumstances leading to this unfortunate incident and shed light on the safety measures in place during the construction.
In a move to hold accountable those potentially responsible for this incident, payments to contractors involved in Smart City projects have been put on hold. The Mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji has requested a comprehensive investigation into the matter before any further payments are made.
This incident underscores the role of the Goa Human Rights Commission in protecting human rights. By taking suo motu action, the commission signifies its commitment to ensuring that responsible parties are held accountable for any negligence that may have led to the loss of a life. The tragic death of the young man amplifies the need for stringent safety measures and responsible construction practices.
