PANAJI: The Goa government has decided to construct the much-anticipated ‘Prashashan Stambh’—set to be the tallest government structure in the state—at Chimbel, on land originally designated for an IT park project that was shelved following public opposition several years ago.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced the decision on Wednesday, stating that the State Cabinet has approved the transfer of 25,000 square metres of land from the IT Department to the General Administration Department (GAD) for the construction of the administrative tower.
In addition, the Cabinet also cleared the transfer of another 6,000 square metres of adjacent land from the IT Department to the Goa Tourism Department for developing tourism-related infrastructure.
Envisioned to rise 75 metres high with 15 floors, the Prashashan Stambh is estimated to cost over ₹300 crore. It has long been pitched as a modern symbol of governance in Goa.
Originally, the project was slated to come up at Patto, opposite the Pariyatan Bhavan near Ourem Creek in Panaji. However, concerns about urban congestion led to a change in plans. Construction at the original site was already underway with a few floors completed before the project was curtailed and repurposed as a mini-convention centre.
The government is now reviving the project with a fresh start at Chimbel, signaling its continued intent to push forward with ambitious infrastructure development, despite earlier setbacks.
