PORVORIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said that the government has dropped the plan of compensatory afforestation in Madhya Pradesh; instead it will be done in the state itself.
In response to a query from Goa Forward MLA Vijai Sardesai during the current Assembly session, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated that the administration has decided to afforest in Goa itself after analyzing the circumstances.
“A decision has been made to review afforestation, and this will be done in Goa itself. The Madhya Pradesh afforestation plan has been scrapped. It will be carried out in state forests’ unoccupied land. We no longer have any plans for Madhya Pradesh, he said.
According to sources, the Central Empowered Committee recommended compensatory afforestation after thousands of trees were felled in the state for highway and electricity projects.
The Goa BJP administration was criticized by the opposition last year for choosing to afforest in Madhya Pradesh, a decision that has since been reversed.
