PANAJI: All Goa Taxi Union Association today held a protest meeting at Azad Maidan against the state government’s decision to bring in Ola and Uber app-based taxi services into the State.
“We condemn the decision of the state government to bring these app-based taxis in Goa: we have complied with the directions of the government regarding speed governors and digital meters,” the taxi operators said.
They further claimed that the state government is out on snatching away their livelihood.
“We are ready to sit with the state government and come up with a mutually amicable solution,” they added.
They further claimed that most of the tourists who come from metro cities, namely Mumbai, know how taxis and autos, which run on meters, take the customers for a ride by taking longer routes.
Another taxi owner warned that the Transport Minister will be responsible if the educated youth become gangsters once Ola and Uber are brought here.
The Minister was criticised for not solving the issues faced by the taxi owners and drivers in Goa and yet wanting to bring in Ola and Uber, which could make most of them bankrupt.
The taxi operators also complained about how the government always brings in taxis from outside Goa instead of employing local taxis for major events that are held in the State.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, during the assembly session, revealed that Goa will soon have an app-based taxi service.
He said that an app-based taxi service would be built with everyone’s help.
