PANAJI: Heavy rains along with gusty rains lashed Goa on Tuesday morning, leading to several roads and slowing down traffic across State.
The southwest monsoon crossed 50 inches mark in the Coastal State with over 53 inches of rains since June 1, slightly above normal average.
The showers that started late last night continued till morning, leading to waterlogging at several locations. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa observatory has put the State on Orange Alert till July 15, wherein State is likely to receive heavy showers.
The development of low-pressure area off north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts, east-west shear zone running roughly along Lat.18°N between 3.1km& 5.8 km above mea sea level and another Low-Pressure Area, formed over south Gujarat & adjoining Northeast Arabian Sea, has strengthened the monsoon currents over Goa coast.
As per IMD records, the State has so far received 53 inches (1365.5mm) of rainfall as against the average trend of 52 inches (1335.8mm). State is witnessing 2 per cent surplus rains as of now.
So far, July 11 has been the wettest day of the season, with 5 inches of rain in a day.
The month of June ended with 37 inches of rains, while July so far has recorded 16 inches of rains.
Rain played havoc in Panjim city as its perennial waterlogging problems in low lying areas and roads continued.
The city’s arterial roads, especially the 18th June road, were inundated, causing diversion of traffic and water entering shops, establishments, and hotels along the perimeter of the road. Water also entered houses in low lying areas of Mala, Panjim, which has been prone to flooding over the years.
Social media was abuzz with pictures of flooding across Panjim, which left CCP, red-faced for lack of pre-monsoon works.
Almost all parts of the city received heavy rainfall in equal proportions throughout the day. The locals were seen complaining about the various works, which were kept incomplete, resulting in waterlogging.
The road stretch from Miramar to Dona Paula, the interior roads at Taleigao, Shankarwadi, and Caranzalem faced inunadation, causing severe hardship to the commuters.
Not just Panaji, rains wreaked havoc in entire states with complaints of trees being uprooted and flooding in various parts.
In Guirim, the road leading to internal areas was flooded as there is no way for water to pass due to national highway project.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to the rough weather, though the fisheries department lifted the ban on fishing in the state from August 1.
The month of June had ended with six per cent surplus rains. However, compared to the last year, the month recorded much lower rainfall. The month had recorded over 37 inches of rainfall in 2020.
