OLD GOA: In a swift and robust response to the recent terror attack on civilians in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which sent shockwaves across the nation, the Old Goa Police have launched an intensive combing operation across multiple areas in and around the capital region.
The operation was aimed at bolstering security and preventing any possible spillover of threats into the region.
The combing operation, which unfolded across the densely populated localities of Indiranagar Chimbel, other parts of Chimbel, Merces, and Santa Cruz, began as part of an enhanced security protocol activated in the aftermath of the Kashmir incident.
Given the sensitivity of the current security environment, the Goa Police, in coordination with intelligence inputs and local enforcement units, carried out door-to-door verifications, identity checks, and preventive surveillance.
In total, 252 individuals were rounded up during the operation. Of these, 21 were formally arrested under preventive provisions, while another 12 were detained under the Stranger Roll—a protocol that allows authorities to track individuals without fixed local addresses or valid identification.
These measures are designed to ensure that individuals with unclear or suspicious backgrounds do not pose a threat to local communities.
Senior police officials overseeing the operation emphasized that these actions were preemptive in nature and stemmed from an abundance of caution.
“In the aftermath of the tragic events in Kashmir, we are committed to ensuring that no corner of our state becomes vulnerable to elements that seek to destabilize peace,” said a senior officer from Old Goa Police.
“Public safety remains our top priority, and such measures, though strict, are essential.”
Residents in the areas reported a visible presence of uniformed personnel throughout the day, with temporary checkpoints and identity verification booths established in several lanes.
Locals welcomed the increased police presence, viewing it as a necessary step to safeguard their neighborhoods.
Officials added that those detained were being thoroughly vetted, and anyone found with valid documentation and no criminal background would be released promptly.
The Goa Police also issued an appeal to the public to remain calm, cooperate with law enforcement, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
This operation is part of a broader set of nationwide security alerts following the Kashmir incident, with several states ramping up surveillance and stepping up patrols in vulnerable zones.
The incident underscores how terror threats in one part of the country can trigger ripple effects in distant regions, prompting authorities to act swiftly to neutralize any potential risk.
For now, Goa remains on high alert, with law enforcement agencies maintaining round-the-clock vigilance and preparing for any contingency.
