CHENNAI: As the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clinched victory against Mumbai Indians in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 opener, it was a familiar face behind the stumps that stole the spotlight. MS Dhoni, at 43, demonstrated why he remains an invaluable asset to his team, executing a lightning-fast stumping that left spectators and opponents alike in awe.
The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman, known for his unorthodox style, revealed insights into his approach during a post-match interview. “If I’m not wicketkeeping, I think I’m useless on the field,” Dhoni candidly admitted, emphasizing the crucial role his position plays in his game-reading abilities.
Dhoni’s stumping of Mumbai Indians’ captain Suryakumar Yadav, completed in a mere 0.12 seconds, showcased his enduring reflexes. However, when questioned about a spectacular one-handed catch from the previous season, Dhoni downplayed the feat. “It’s a fluke,” he stated, likening it to “a sack of rice falling from the back of a truck.”
The former India captain’s preference for a more conservative approach behind the stumps was evident as he described himself as a “safe keeper.” Dhoni explained his philosophy: “I’ve always been a fan of trying to take catches with two hands, and it helps.”
Despite his modest self-assessment, Dhoni’s impact on the game remains significant. He elaborated on how his position allows him to interpret the nuances of each delivery and communicate valuable insights to the team’s leadership.
As CSK secured their first win of the season, fans at Chepauk Stadium were treated to a brief Dhoni appearance at the crease. Though he faced only two deliveries, his presence was enough to electrify the crowd, underscoring his enduring popularity and influence in the IPL.
