New Delhi: The INDIA bloc is set to march to the Supreme Court on Monday as part of its escalating campaign demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The protest, dubbed “Chalo Dilli” by the Congress, is expected to bring together several prominent Opposition leaders, including Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav.
The march forms part of a broader series of demonstrations organised by Opposition parties and the youth group Cockroach Janta Party. The protesters have raised concerns over the voter list revision exercise and alleged irregularities in the electoral process.
The Opposition has accused the Election Commission of failing to ensure transparency and fairness during the revision of electoral rolls. Its demands include Kumar’s resignation and measures to address concerns over the inclusion and deletion of voters’ names.
However, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has declined a request from Opposition leaders to meet him and receive their memorandum. He has emphasised that the Supreme Court’s doors remain open to citizens and elected representatives, advising the leaders to approach the court through a formal petition.
The Chief Justice’s response cited the judicial process as the appropriate channel for addressing the issues, which are already under consideration before the court.
The planned demonstration is expected to draw attention to the Opposition’s campaign for electoral accountability and its objections to the SIR exercise. The INDIA bloc has also announced plans for further rallies and marches as it seeks to build pressure on the Election Commission.
Security arrangements, traffic restrictions and road diversions have been planned in parts of the national capital ahead of the march. Commuters have been advised to remain alert to possible disruptions and check traffic updates before travelling.
The protest marks another escalation in the political confrontation between the Opposition and the Election Commission over electoral roll revisions, with the INDIA bloc insisting that its campaign will continue through demonstrations and legal action.
