New Delhi: India assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate has addressed growing questions over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s absence from the T20I squad, stating that while the teenage batting prodigy is ready for international cricket, he must still go through the established team process before earning a debut.
Sooryavanshi’s non-selection during the recent T20 series against Ireland has drawn significant attention, especially after India suffered a surprising 0-2 series defeat, including a one-run loss in the second match on Sunday.
Speaking after the match, Ten Doeschate acknowledged the youngster’s talent but stressed the importance of balance within the squad. He pointed out that senior players such as Sanju Samson have contributed significantly in recent successes, including India’s World Cup triumph just months ago.
“He is absolutely ready to play international cricket, there is no doubt about that,” Ten Doeschate said. “But Sanju Samson is a guy who went a long way to win us the World Cup three months ago. It is important to give players confidence and a long run in the team.”
The coach added that while the team is excited about Sooryavanshi’s future, selection decisions must follow a structured pathway. He also echoed similar sentiments previously shared by batting coach Sitanshu Kotak.
Sooryavanshi has been one of the standout performers in domestic and IPL cricket, finishing as the top scorer in the latest IPL season with 776 runs at an explosive strike rate of over 230. His performances earned him both the Most Valuable Player and Emerging Player awards.
The teenager’s growing reputation has sparked anticipation over his international debut, with India set to tour England for a T20 series beginning July 1 in Chester-le-Street. If selected, Sooryavanshi would become India’s youngest-ever international debutant, surpassing a record held by Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted at 16.
